Happy Friday! 
This was a negative mask.  I cut the oval with the Big Shot, then used the negative (in this case it was a square with the oval cut out and missing) to keep the white space white while I sponged the oval.  The most important part is keeping a firm grip on the negative - you don't want it to slide.  You can use temporary adhesive if you need to secure the mask down.
